What's Your Secret Writing Expertise?
Everyone's an expert in *something* — so let's swap some knowledge!
Hey there, writerfolk!
Who wants to do some collective R&D to make ALL our stories richer and more authentic?
This month’s Quiet Writing Workshop by Andrea A. Firth has been all about exploring the everyday moments — the real life stuff that perhaps initially doesn’t seem story-worthy, but turns out to be a treasure trove of personal insight and relatability.
Which made me think about the wealth of knowledge that must be contained within this wonderful community.
Because we all have expertise that might feel everyday to us, but would prove invaluable to another writer. For example:
If you’re writing a story based in a place you’re unfamiliar with, perhaps there’s someone in the community who actually lives there!
If you’re writing a story that involves medical terminology, perhaps there’s someone in the community who’s a doctor or nurse who could help!
If you’re writing a story about a character who loves knitting but you’ve never touched a ball of yarn in your life, perhaps there’s someone in the community who is a master crafter!
So, is there a particular research subject you need help with?
Ask The Forever Workshop community and crowdsourced some expert info!
And, of course, to create a balance of give and take, why not offer up your own expertise in exchange?
What expert knowledge could you share from your job, training or education?
What expert knowledge could you share from your hobbies, skills and talents?
What expert knowledge could you share from your general life experiences?
Share one interesting tidbit from your personal catalogue of life knowledge…
Give us a piece of interesting info from your day job, niche hobby, or a specific insight to help a fellow writer out!
So go ahead and swap your expertise. Perhaps it’ll be exactly what someone needs to develop their story. Perhaps you’ll find the perfect nugget of information to plug a gap in your own writing. Or perhaps you’ll be inspired to write something brand new.
I’m certain this lovely community is full of fascinating, knowledgeable folk, and I’m super excited to find out what you all know.
Happy sharing!
Thanks for the great idea for this thread Jo. Love seeing all this cool experience and writers willing to share. I'm a lifelong swimmer and do a fair amount of open water swimming. My next ocean adventure is a week swimming in the Dalmatian coast off Croatia. Happy to talk water and swimming anytime.
I work at a cemetery! People get burials and cemetery scenes wrong roughly 100% of the time, so, AMA, I guess!
