The Importance of a Poetic Turn

The poetic turn — often called the volta — is the moment a poem shifts direction, deepens, or reveals something unexpected. It’s the hinge that moves a poem from simply describing an experience to transforming it.

A poetic turn reshapes how a reader understands a poem. It introduces a shift that expands meaning, often creating one (or more) of three primary effects:
