Our Mission & Process

Why we're doing all of this in the first place and how it will work from here.

WoD101 is a collaborative project between Write or Die Magazine & Chill Subs.

The cost of writing education can be kinda ridiculous, leading to loads of the same old problems where only those who can afford to learn are able to learn. So here’s our plan.

Every month, trained instructors will teach a course to our subscribers. They will fully be taking over this Substack for the duration of their course and engaging directly with subscribers.

These courses will comprise 8-12 lessons per month and arrive via email. Each lesson will also be posted on the WoD101 homepage where subscribers can connect with instructors, share exercises, and discuss lessons with their classmates.

2024 Workshop Calendar

All subscribers (so, both free and paid) get the first two weeks of each monthly course for free. Always. That's 2-3 lessons per week to your inbox. Paid subscribers receive an additional two weeks of lessons which usually contain more generative aspects and instructor interactions. Paid subscribers also receive 10% off Write or Die's regular workshops.

For those unfamiliar with Substack's model, it allows us to do two things:

1. Send weekly lessons out to subscribers via email.

2. Have comment sections, discussion threads, notes and other tools.

So, once you subscribe, you'll be able to:

• Access the first two weeks of any course as it happens.

• Receive each new free lesson via email as it comes out.

• Participate in all exercises, commenting, and discussions.

• Save and use any tools or templates provided in the first two weeks.

Once you upgrade to paid, you'll be able to:

• Access all courses that have come before, in full, via our homepage.

• Participate in every lesson of every course from now until you unsubscribe.

• Receive a 10% off discount code for every regular Write or Die Workshop.

• Gain access to everything we come up with for this experiment from now on.

We're big proponents of both fair play and transparency, so here is how the finances of this all works out.

How do our instructors get paid?

• For the month that an instructor is running their course, they receive $10 for everyone who signs up as a paid subscriber. Flat rate, we eat the processing fees.

• Additionally, instructors are given promotional materials and a discount link prior to teaching their course. For every person who uses that link, the instructor gets paid $10.

• If someone signs up for just a month, for only their favorite instructor's course, 100% of what they pay goes to the instructor.

So...how do we get paid?

• Our hope is that subscribers choose to stay on, or subscribe for a full year, so that we have the funds to keep all of this going.
