Emma Darwin’s new novel, The Bruegel Boy, has been named as one of The Times Best Historical Novels for 2025, and Book of the Month. Her debut, The Mathematics of Love is probably the only novel ever simultaneously nominated for both Commonwealth Writers Best First Book and RNA Book of the Year awards, and her second novel, A Secret Alchemy, was a Sunday Times bestseller. She is also the author of Get Started in Writing Historical Fiction and the memoir This is Not a Book About Charles Darwin. She holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths, has taught at Oxford University, Goldsmiths and the Open University, and her renowned blog This Itch of Writing with Emma Darwin, now on Substack, is coming up for its twentieth birthday; it’s linked to by writing courses around the world.
