Announcing our Metaphorical (and Literal) Contest Winners!
Have you won a lifetime subscription to The Forever Workshop & Sub Club?
Hey there, wordler.
Last month we were so inspired by the Fierce and Flawless Figurative Language workshop that we ran a lil literary contest to see who could come up with the best original metaphor — and holy metaphorical cow did you guys deliver.
We received almost 100 entries across a whole range of styles, from comic to heartbreaking (read them all here) and we’ve chosen our five favourite below.
We also thought it might be useful to tell you why they won, for research purposes.
Each of these fantastic authors will win a lifetime premium membership to both The Forever Workshop and our sister stack: Sub Club.
So without further ado, let’s read some killer metaphors!
AND THE WINNERS ARE…
“A smirk of moon climbs the quiet hours.”
By Heather Brown Barrett
What we loved: the playful (or mischievous?) personality of the moon and that beautiful physicality of time
“Appa’s memory is an upside-down tree — the roots above and branches running underground.”
By Vijayalakshmi Sridhar
What we loved: such a clever and memorable way to flip a familiar image — as well as the whole concept of a family tree
“I was born with my name hanging heavy around my neck the way some kids get born with the cord.”
By Anna
What we loved: great narrative voice and a bold, vivid metaphor that delivers a heap of subtext in just one line.
“It was a merry-go-round infatuation — fun, safe, headed nowhere.”
By Andrea Benvenuto
What we loved: succinct, apt and witty, with an underlying layer that makes you want to find out more about these characters
“My mother, in her illness, was a tipped ship.”
By Patricia P
What we loved: this has such weight and significance to it that gives a tangible sense of the precariousness of the situation
Huge congratulations to our five winners! (We’ll be in touch with each of you individually to let you know how to claim your prize.)
And if your metaphor wasn’t chosen, or this is the first you’re even hearing about our wordplay contest, we’ve got a lil’ consolation prize for you - We’ve extended FREE access to the first lesson of our Figurative Language workshop: Mastering the Metaphor for a whole extra month :)
I'm honored and excited! Thank you!
Wow, I am so grateful, thank you! That's an understatement, really. I am honored & grateful. You have no idea. What a happy surprise. Thank you again.
